Fine Homes of Park Cities

I am working on some upcoming posts I'm super excited to share with you but in the mean time I thought you might enjoy some eye candy.  I was strolling the Park Cities neighborhood the other day with my kids (i.e. checking out the gorgeous homes) and thought you might enjoy seeing a small snippet of the great architecture in this area.

Love a great tudor and the giant easter eggs are really fun!

Perfection with the grand two-story columns.  Southern at its best.

Again a grand two-story column using a doric column and the red brick and grey-blue shutters gives this home a different feel than the white and black above image.

Cute cape-cod style home nestled in with the giants.  I am a big fan of reachable taste!

I like the bay windows on this house.  I can never get enough black and white.

This home's white-washed brick with pristine white paint and grey shutters make it a charmer.

Guest Blogger Series: Teresa Hatfield from Splendid Sass

I am thrilled to be here today!  When Trisha asked if I would be a guest on her blog, I couldn't decide what to post about, and then I thought about social media, its benefits and its downfalls.  I was a late comer to social media for my blog and business, but it has proven itself many times over as an important tool. Social media is networking for the internet.  There will not be any pretty pictures in this post, just information.  Maybe Trisha will invite me back to share some of my favorite designs.

I entered into this thing called blogging out of a totally different arena.  I had worked in the financial industry as a banker and later as a stockbroker.  If you don't think you have to promote yourself in that competitive business, think again!  I can't imagine how much more successful I would have been with social media as an advertising and public relations tool!

SO... I just dove in! I started a Facebook page for my blog, Splendid Sass, and my Etsy shop, T G Hatfield & Company.  I post each blog post to my Splendid Sass Facebook and Twitter pages (@splendidsass), and my blog posts also show up on my Linkedin page.   I then post my blog images,  along with images from the blogposts of fellow bloggers and images on the main pinterest boards, onto my Pinterest page.  I have just started an Instagram for Splendid Sass (@splendidsass) and love its platform.

NOW A CONFESSION! Until very recently I had not made much of attempt to nurture these platforms.  My daughter had been pushing me to improve, so I am now in the process of planning a new website, and the social media will be at the forefront, bold and bright! I will also be adding high end towels with monogramming to my personal and Etsy shop, which will be included in the website.  It is going to be an undertaking to say the least, and many of you understand this from experience.

For those of you not familiar with the social media tools at your disposal, I have listed each one with a description.  I hope this will give your the nudge you need to become a part of the game.  I will certainly be calling on my fellow bloggers and friends for suggestions and advice as I move forward.

~~<>~~

FACEBOOK is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends and upload pictures and articles.  I have been reunited with so many fellow classmates and friends! I doubt I have to tell most about Facebook.

TWITTER is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read short 140-character text messages, called "tweets".  I keep up with what is going on in the lives of fellow bloggers and friends and also post my blog posts there.

PINTEREST is a visual discovery tool that you can use to find ideas for all your projects and interests.  You can follow the pinterest boards of others, and when they post images, they show up on the main page, allowing you to "pin" the images to your own boards.  I can't tell you how obsessed I am with Pinterest!

LINKEDIN is a business-oriented social networking service. It helps you discover professional individuals and opportunities, business deals, and new ventures. My blog posts are shared on linkedin in also.

INSTAGRAM is a vast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends and business owners through a series of photos and links. I can't tell you how much I love Instagram, and I am just getting started!

I want to thank Trisha so much for inviting me to be a guest on her beautiful blog.

Mark Ferguson Lecture for the ICAA in Dallas

I felt like I met a celebrity when Mark Ferguson came to Dallas for the ICAA April event to talk about "The Personality of a House".  He actually walked up to me and introduced himself.  I was speechless at first and of course people were coming up to him to talk to him so our first meeting was brief.  Then excitedly we all entered the SMU lecture hall after an hour reception at the Meadows Museum to hear Mark Ferguson from Ferguson and Shamamian talk to us about his work and his philosophy on design.

I was probably the only one in the room taking notes but I didn't want to miss what he had to say.  First of all, Mark Ferguson is now the chair of the board for the ICAA national non-profit organization that exists to promote classical tradition in the arts, architecture and design.  So not only is he a master at traditional approaches but he takes a keen interest in promoting classical design and talked of especially wanting to include and reach the young professionals out there.

He started out talking about his education and several of his first jobs in the field of architecture and design and feeling like the juxtaposition of classical architecture and modern interiors was not a marriage he was in favor of.  The relationship of focusing on geometric shapes and intersections alone was missing an element of design he was made for.  After joining Parrish-Hadley in 1984, he said that it "defined the direction of his career".  "Parrish-Hadley" he said "took an interest in the architectural background and the creation of a complete environment."  "They made well-mannered interiors for sophisticated clients.  Taking the historical and vernacular into consideration, they focused on gracious proportions, convenient flow, appropriate expressions of character, ambiance and quality" said Mark Ferguson about Parrish-Hadley.

I couldn't write fast enough!

Another influence of his was Emily Post and he described her as "a chronic house builder and decorator herself".  He highly recommend the book she wrote The Personality of a House.

Palm Beach, Florida

Then he took us on an adventure inside his work and mind with slide after slide of amazing projects.  I had to make sure my mouth was not hanging open because I knew I loved his work but I just fell deeper in love with the way each project across the United States stands the test of time with its well procured interiors, site planned with perfection, always taking in the views, the natural light, the lifestyle of each client.  Not a beat was missed and I'm sure not a client was disappointed when finally arriving at their dream becoming a reality with the creation of Mark Ferguson's work.

Palm Beach, FL

Each project location started with research in the local historical works of that area.  The landscape, views and client vision were all factors in starting the creative process.  Considering materials, balance, form, and function, all of the principles of design were absorbed before moving further with the design process.  It makes me wonder if that is what so many projects are missing these days, a lack of foundation and concentration on the principles of design and historical examples because so many are in such a rush to complete a project?

Well, after the gracious and fascinating look at his work and wrapping up the night, I couldn't escape without a picture and to tell him how much I admire his work and that he really is like a celebrity to me.  I mentioned that I blogged about the firm in a 2 part series here and here.  Never dreamed I would actually get to meet him in person.  Thanks to the Institute of Architecture and Art, I get to meet and hear from the most amazing architects and experts in the field of classical design.  Lyn Muse of Lyn Muse Interiors, Larry Sebastian with Sebastian Construction, Brent Hull with Hull Historical along with Larry Boerder of Larry E. Boerder Associates were the sponsors that brought about Mark Ferguson coming to Dallas.  Thank you all for your contributions so a young professional like myself can plant more seeds of classicism on my passion for good design.

California Cape Cod in Pacific Palisades

1027 Iliff St.
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
5 Bedrooms 6 Baths
4,100 Sq. Ft.
$3,600,000
I thought this home was worth sharing with you.  It's refreshing to see all the pale yellow and gray and hints of blue.  Very bright and light.  A neutral and clean take on traditional.  The yellow walls remind me of the Father of the Bride living room paint color.  I especially love all the windows and natural light filtering into this home and the contrast between the floor and the walls make the neutral furnishings pop ever so softly.  So if clean and simple is your thing and you still like traditional without lots of prints and patterns then this look is just for you.

~Have a blessed day~
